SMART Tags / 2D-codes UpCode & VoicEye are on-demand printed at publicly available books: at every 2-nd page & at SMART sticker, integrated in dust jacket - to create DUALbook co-ownership & to leverage library/bookstore/club patron’s behavior. Incentive: patron may add own content & decentralized.id to DUALbook, in2clicks at book’s 2D-code: (1) by scanning 2D-code by patron’s gadget; or (2) by showing OWN book’s code of detached sticker - to web camera. Anonymized data of behavior is visually tokenized: by context-related image at screen (bit.ly/2Jwv36p) / by code’s color-changed-ink (TagItWine).

This SI is integration of several technologies by SmartPaper.fi; and part of these technologies I implemented at mass market in 2008-2012 to Russia: (1) for 35 million families’ utility & telecom bills, letters, printed at pre-finished forms/self-mailers, also with 2D-codes (2) for production of primary schools textbooks’ flexible covers (3 mln. new books p.A.) (3) for integration of NFC-cards/stickers into home-deliverable letters/self-mailers.
I stopped it in 2012 due to legal issues in Russia: privacy doesn’t work for personal data processing - for the core of SmartPaper.fi technology for ’digitizing paper’ products.
Social (incl. behavioural) - We provide technology for replacing AdBlocked revenues & attention/data abusing digital consumerism practices - by consumer-generated / user-tailor-cut Digital Learning Actions (DLA), as incentives to e-Learning; engaging people to social inclusion and to consumer-centricity-shifting power balance in society - from corporate platforms ruling - to people’s cooperation (e.g. via books voluntary digitization & sharing) - to influencing governmental policies via decentralized inputs by consumers’ DLA: Edge AI processed data, created by local scanning of DUALbooks’ SMART 2D-codes by own smartphones. To decrease vulnerabilities from centralized top-down-built digital services/surveillance & attention abuses of B2C/G2C interactions: by leveraging bottom-up created data for culture & heritage preservation, via co-owned DUAL books. Co-ownership for books shifts paradigm: from resource-intensive individual ownership - to more eco-friendly sharing & circular economies.
Organisational / Business model - We propose a combined business model STOLIC-LUX: STO (books sales in STOres) + LI (books borrowing in LIbraries) + CLU (readers engagement in book CLUbs) + UX (electronic media User eXperiences: audio/video & Augmented contents). A DUALbook - when non-available by book reservation via public library - is on-demand printed in one copy for patron’s own use, i.e. Copyright Law-conform (maybe also delivered in SMART envelope to home or to book club, i.e. eliminating retailer logistics & storage costs of book store & library); a patron may keep the DUALbook as long as wishes; may share it C2C via mobile app (https://dual-books.sharetribe.com/) as a physical only / paper book - via ENHANCED public library app (to be delivered from last-mile point of printing-to-pier by local people’s couriers, like http://piggybaggy.com/en/), i.e. without library costs of book manual handling&storage; sent to recycling or back to local library - via app, with minimal costs (eliminating costs of patron travel to library ). I started SI step-by-step, by re-selling of print&finishing equipment from EU, for implementations of different cutting-edge technologies for personalized documents printing, including books-to become-personalized (on-demand printed). I constructed in mind an integrated product (DUAL book) for societal inclusion & engagement of people; by benefits of a new model of access to digital services: from each digital (Learning) action - by clicking at co-owned book.
SI Factors of success
Technological - (1) On-demand printing is growing trend. In Finland Bookwell Digital Oy* started this business in 2017; in Italy: Rotomail** is EU-leader in book-on-demand production, since 2008. Economic - Paying customer, B2B: publisher. Risk-adverse publishers might be able to calculate if SI business model STOLIC-LUX will improve cash-flows; publisher’s customer - public libraries - might be economically interested* / able to add connection to new types of ordering (e.g. orphan) books: from abroad, from archives etc. - for on-demand printing (in one copy for own use, i.e. Copyright conform, per Section 12, Section 17 (1) of Finnish Copyright Act; but subject to eventual approving of economically unpredictable & legal procedures / institutional reforms). So, discussions with (& economical calculations by B2B customers) publishers and libraries could prove viability of SI. *viable: less costs (certain manual jobs and storage/logistics costs are eliminated by STOLIC-LUX streamlining business models of publishers/actors) and more lending acts, due to widening scope of available books. Each library lending act is remunerated from EU National state fund (0,25€/book in 2018, 67 mln. public libraries’ books lending acts in 2017, Finland).
Environmental - DUALbooks enable replacement of plastic lamination of public libraries books / protection from wearing - by double-layer PAPER dust jacket. Political - DUALbooks enable Open Access, Opening Knowledge, Opening Data via consumers engagement, that might be considered out-of-influence/out-of-interest of political parties agenda by some politicians. So, involvement of NGO, like Open Knowledge Finland, for OA advocacy - might be a success factor. Social - Finland is world’s most literate country; world biggest in coffee consuming per capita. It might be a success factor to combine places of consuming books & coffee - and making all the world books accessible from DUALbook cafe. So, word-of-mouth could help to diffuse technology from a first trial of Espresso Book Machine at Big Helsinki Area/Helmet: discussions for a trial are under way with three biggest Helmet public libraries. Perhaps the Finland biggest library to be opened in 2019 could be the viable prospect.
Ethical - A lot of hype about Facebook & Google abuse of consumer attention by ads social media technologies; AI threats for replacing job places by robots. Incentives for replacement of time spent yet at abusing social media practices - by courses, effective for qualify for a new job - could be helpful to offer DUALbooks as a source for free & high quality professional re-education courses for people, whose jobs to-be-soon lost. Discussions with best practices (mobile) Learning & Educational companies are under way, like with Funzi.
Primary - NGO Open Knowledge Finland/OKFI* is interested in enabling new business models/cases/practices for Open Access, MyData, Opening Public Data. OKFI has resources to support building business such cases - e.g. DUALbooks. I belong to activists of OKFI, e.g. to leverage OKFI MOOC ’GDPR for citizens rights’ for competitive advantages of DUALbooks: MOOC showed (including official confirmation from a public social service KELA*) that PAPER communication is more secure than G2C emails - and thus GDPR-conform. It may be used as a level for offering DUALbooks tool for a public services portal Suomi.fi: for building Hybrid Mail services at the base of my startup’s/SmartPaper.fi technology. Tertiary - (1) Finnish atmosphere for innovations helps to steadily improve my implementing innovations aptitudes: e.g. by regular meetings in Innovation House Finland, Espoo/IHF -with successful startups CEOs - like mentors for my development of innovative abilities.
