1st round of CASI Citizen Panel Meetings completed

In the CASI project we consider citizens to be ‘everyday experts’, which is why we invite them to become more active in making contributions towards the setting of priorities for future research in the area of sustainable innovation.

Through the whole of April 2015 the CASI team has mobilized over 200 European citizens and organised the first round of citizen panel meetings in 12 EU countries, including: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, and United Kingdom.

The ultimate aim of the workshops was to help European decision-makers develop relevant research priorities about environmental sustainability. To do so, the first round of public participation meetings focused on gathering citizens’ hopes, fears and visions for a desirable sustainable future, both - in their own countries and Europe as a whole. Each panel consisted of around 18-25 citizens and produced 4-5 well-elaborated visions leading to a total of 50 visions, which are being collated into a visions catalogue that is to be presented and discussed by an expert panel in June 2015.  A group of experts on sustainable innovation policy will translate these visions into concrete research priorities and research policy recommendations for sustainable innovation. The same groups of citizens will gather once again in October 2015 in order to validate experts’ proposals thus ensuring the priorities are relevant and consistent with the original visions. Once approved the visions and research priorities will be presented to relevant stakeholders and policy-makers across Europe.

The citizens were pleased with the opportunity of being able to share and express their views and to take part in the vision-making process. Below you can see selected pictures from the citizen panel meetings.
