Grow the world: A Sustainable development school

Marcelline Tommaseo Institute of Milan, in collaboration with Milan social cooperative CAMELOT, has designed a new training model directed to each level of school: The sustainable development school project. The project, called Grow the world, is born in 2017 and wants to promote education for sustainable development in the area of education. The purpose of this project is to spread sustainability culture to implement the 17 sustainable development Goals provided for by 2030 Agenda of United Nations. The 2030 Agenda and the Papa Francesco’s Laudato Sì encyclical are the main references for government and humanity to create concerned and responsible citizens to their economic, social and environmental reality. The focus of sustainable development school project is to define a new humanism that allow human to become socially responsible, conscious of world resources and careful to common good. The project is realized through two levels activities: management level and educational level.

  • Service / Process - The sustainable development school project introduces a new educational model.
  • Organisational / Business model - The sustainable development school project is based on a new organisational approach of the school. To realize its purpose, the Institute applies not only a educational and values change, but also a methodologic conversion. As a consequence, the Institute can create a local network with enterprises, universities and PA.
  • Social (incl. behavioural) - The Institute knows how each lifestyle generate economic, political, social and environmental impacts and for this reason it collaborates with its stakeholders (teachers, students) to spread sustainability lifestyle through an interdisciplinary approch. Moreover, to realise its purpose, the Institute creates a network with enterprises, universities and PA.
  • Governance - Scholastic governance system has been modify and has been establish control groups for the project realization.

SI Origin

The process initiated in 2016. Unesco’s 2030 Agenda and the Francesco Pope’s Laudato Sì encyclical are the main references at the bases of the project. The project is realized through two levels of activities: management and educational levels. On the educational one has been identifyed six macro-areas in order to lead to a multidisciplinarity orienteted to a sustainability education with the aim to develop the seventeen 2030 Agenda’s goals. Macro areas are: 1. Care for creation (to develop the goals n° 3, 6, 7, 13, 14, 15) 2. Human being (to develop the goals n° 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 16) 3. Languages and cultures (to develop the goals n° 5, 10, 11, 16, 17) 4. New economies and jobs (to develop the goals n° 1, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 17) 5. Arts and aesthetics (to develop the goals n° 4, 7, 9, 11, 12, 15, 17) 6. Sport (to develop the goals n° 3, 4, 5, 10, 16) About management level, to support the project, has been created local and international networks.

SI Factors of success

  • Economic - The project leads to have a saving on the school’s costs. Morever, the project entails a saving for the families due to the introduction of support service as psychopedagogic consultation (to guaratee the student’s psychological health) and homework support with curricular teachers.
  • Environmental - Thanks to the project, in the school, the recycling has been improved introducing three trash cans in every classroom and in the hallways. Moreover mugs has been distributed to counteract the consumption of plastic cups. In addition, thanks to the cooperation with Pellegrini catering, the food waste has been reduced recycling food leftovers.
  • Social - It’s an eduticave project based on the active partecipation envolving all the stakeholders that permits to create aware citizens.
  • Ethical - It permits to spread a responsible vision to external reality. Student became aware about the environment, the society, the political and economic structure. These facts lead to responsible actions and to contribute to the improvement of own context

  • Secondary - We have interviewed Marta Bosini - principal of Institute - , Sister Sara Brenda and Caterina Milcolani - project executive -. In the project is involved all the actors of Institute. We can distinguish different practices: 1) water waste counteracting: selling water bottle with Institute’s logo. 2) Educative actions to reduce energy consumption 3) Plastic use counteracting: citizens level event in collaboration with North Face (documentary on Netflix) 4) Recycling 5) Events about plastic waste, climate changing in collaboration with a voulcanologist 6) Partnership with FEEM to spread a sustainability environment concept in the classroom through specific education with experts. The outputs of this work will be shown to the citizenry. 7) Events for the promotion of the model to the citizenry 8) Sustainability festival in collaboration with Strehler Theater 9) Events to sensitize about gender differences through the realization of a red bench in collaboration with city of Milan. 10) Creation of the group with the aim of the project realization leads by Caterina Micolano. 11) Student exchange with canadian international school of Monreal: 15 students in the Institute to work on sustainability. For these students has been organised a speech about Milan’s strategic lines and photograhy regarding migrants hold by Cosimo Palazzi, and with Nausica Pezzoni with her presentation about migrants map. 12) Meeting with ’Rotonda di Baranzate’ association (new economy and jobs: dressmaker and medical ambulatory) 13) Promotion of external and internal comunication of the project by Sister Sara Brenda and Caterina Micolano.
