Hollerich Village is a 3.6 hectare ex-industrial site in the heart of the city of Luxembourg that aims to offer a high quality of life for residents while reducing their environmental impact. The Schuler Group wants to turn the village into a ground-breaking pilot to demonstrate how sustainable development can be delivered in practice, manages the eco-district.
The overall aim is to create an urban hub that strengthens the local economy and boosts the competitiveness of companies in construction and sustainable development.
The Action Plan explains how energy consumption will be reduced and how 100% of the heat and 20% of the electricity can be generated on-site. Nature and food production are a key part of the action plan, which includes uncovering and re-naturalising of a river and a large community garden.

System - This innovation represents the set of interconnected innovations,where each is dependent on each other.The project aims to create a new eco-system and for this reason involves different actors and business models of sub-innovations.
Social (incl. behavioural) - The project aims to resolve urgent social needs in the area. It includes better environmental footprint, new housing for young people, infrastructure and renewable energy.
Governance - Good governance is promoting by implementing eco-friendly initiatives and infrastructure building in the area. Governmental support of sustainable innovation initiative supports the region and creates a green image of Luxembourg.
SI Objectives
To strengthen the local economy by promoting offers of goods and services nearby. The district will generate a cluster of sustainable development and attract business sector, in particular through a dedicated start-up incubator. The skills in this sector will anticipate future European legislation and strengthen competitiveness of businesses and Luxembourg actors on local and international markets. In addition, the pilot area will become a destination reference circuits included in tourism.
To strengthen the resilience of Luxembourg vis-à-vis the exhaustion of resources of the planet through education, research and investment in the field of sobriety and energy efficiency as well as in the production of renewable energy.
To include a strong social dimension through housing roommates or student residences, with respect to the legislation of social housing, and through the participation of residents in shared activities. Community gardens, library, workshops, home of the transition, common spaces and services promote interactions between residents and social cohesion.
To improve the quality of life and health of the people by promoting a healthy and stimulating environment.
To reduce the ecological footprint of the Grand Duchy while providing a high quality of life and attractive identity. It will contribute to meeting European and international environmental objectives where Luxembourg is committed (reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy, conservation of biodiversity etc.).
SI Origin
The Hollerech Village project is a private initiative of the Schuler Group as landowner. It is a vision and a charter that the group wants to give his land. Currently, the project is based on the master plan "Gate Hollerech" approved by the City in 2008 and still waiting for a change in the PAG (general layout) paving the way for a future (PAP special planning). It will be developed in collaboration with the government taking into account the legal and technical environment. This process may involve economic actors and civil society. The approach Hollerech Village was presented to the College of Mayor and Aldermen, the Planning Department and the Ministry of Economy and Foreign Trade, which gave favourable reviews.
