Greening Technical Skills GT-VET

Critical to the global competitiveness of European industries is a timely response to demands for new mandatory skills.
Greening Technical Vocational Education and Training is a short-termed demand of the industry related to quickly changing (production) technology. Therefore an industry driven European sustainable training module was developed within the European Steel Technology Platform ESTEP: Greening Technical Vocational Education and Training GT VET. This training modul for electrical and mechanical technicians has to be seen as a blueprint for other industries and technical professions. It will be developed further continuously. At the moment the adoptation and modification to the small and medium sized enterprises of the automotive sector is tested: GREEN STAR: GREEN Skills for enterprises Sustainable Training for Automotive suppliers Cluster.

  • Eco-solutions to reduce raw materials use
  • Resource efficient sustainable lifestyles
  • Awareness on raw materials shortage
  • Raw materials conscious sustainable lifestyle
  • Climate change mitigation solutions

SI Type

  • Organisational / Business model - Improvement of the organisational and personell development within the company by raising awareness and capabilities for sustainable production processes through greening technical professions.
  • Product / Process - via social behaviour and green skills of technical professions at the workplace and in the production process the reduction of resources and emissions, the waste of raw material is improved at the workplace

SI Objectives

  • timely and responsive implementation of new mandatory skills
  • development of ongoing and responsive training pathways by focusing on skills for environmental sustainability
  • develop a model of an industry driven and run European sustainable training module
  • continuously identifying and anticipating environmental impacts in everyday work of skilled workers
  • integration of new skill demands in the formal Vocational Education and Training Systems
  • adaptation and transfer to other technical VET professions and production industries (done recently by the GREEN STAR project of the automotive supplyer industry)

SI Origin

The SI process was initiated within the Working Group "People" of the European Steel Technology Platform ESTEP. In this working group (consisting of representatives from the personnel development departments of steel companies, universities and research instituts, and unions) the recent demands of the European Steel Companies concerning Human Resources are discussed continuously. One result was the lack of green skills in the steel companies. Therefore a proposal was made for the Lifelong Learning Programme - Leonardo da Vince which was successfull and funded by the European Commission.

SI Factors of success

  • Social - The training module is straightly related to awareness and activities of technical workers at the workplace and technical apprenticees.
