This scheme was already rolled out and largely implemented at CUE ltd since 2003. This particular project is looking at implementing this at the teaching staff level at the university

SI Type

  • Organisational / Business model - The whole organisation has to change their business model as premises, IT system, and other processes need to be adjusted. The change will come from the corporate that will adopt the change too
  • Service / Process - The main innovation is organisation/business model as the everyday business process is modified according to this new way of working but it is also providing a technical service to staff at the university

SI Objectives

  • Give a flexible working pattern and give a better life balance to staff
  • Help income generation in terms of profitability
  • Assist employees in meeting customers needs if their requirements are outside standard working hours/ location
  • Become a more attractive employer
  • Reduce the occupancy of buildings (increase rentable space for external)
  • Reduce commute time for staff and decrease pressure on car parking facilities

SI Origin

The report on rolling out this scheme from CUE to CU was funded by JISC The original LIW scheme at CUE was initiated by one of the former directors

SI Factors of success

  • Technological - This system heavily depends on good IT services, broadband and IT support in case of issues.
  • Economic - The reduce use of the building by staff make it possible to rent the space commercially, rooms are available for the conference centre but also for tenants to occupy.
  • Environmental - Staff that are not commuting save CO2.
  • Social - Better working conditions and increase of staff satisfaction/performance. Better life/work balance.
