A living platform for sustainable innovation
CASIPEDIA has reached a new milestone, now hosting over 700 mapped sustainable innovation initiatives from across Europe and beyond. What began as a core output of the CASI project has evolved into a rich and continuously growing knowledge base, capturing how sustainability is being shaped in practice.
The platform brings together a wide spectrum of innovations – from products and services to governance models and system transformations – all addressing key challenges such as climate action, resource efficiency, raw materials, and environmental sustainability. It offers a unique window into how innovation unfolds across sectors, scales, and contexts.
From project output to sustained collaboration
What makes this milestone particularly significant is that CASIPEDIA has continued to grow well beyond the end of EU funding in 2018.
Its development has been sustained through ongoing collaboration with the University of Milano-Bicocca, the sister BOLERO project, and the active engagement of MSc students from the Warsaw University of Technology (WUT) and Bialystok University of Technology (BUT). Through these contributions, CASIPEDIA has transitioned from a project deliverable into a self-sustaining knowledge and service platform – an example of service innovation in its own right.
This continued expansion reflects not only institutional commitment, but also the value of CASIPEDIA as a shared resource for learning, analysis, and inspiration.
Mapping diversity, revealing patterns
The database highlights the diversity of sustainable innovation. It includes:
-
product and service innovations,
-
social and organisational models,
-
governance approaches,
-
and system-level transformations.
Most initiatives focus on resource efficiency and climate action, while spanning sectors from manufacturing and energy to agriculture, ICT, and urban systems. The geographical spread ranges from local experiments to national and international initiatives.
Beyond mapping, CASIPEDIA also enables deeper insight. Through tools such as Popper’s Sustainability Scoreboard, users can explore how innovations contribute to environmental protection, social change, economic development, and long-term systemic impact.
More than a repository, CASIPEDIA is becoming a dynamic infrastructure for understanding and advancing sustainable innovation.
